GOOGLE REVIEW KT: We LOVE Mr. Lee!
Because he's such a well-known teacher in the area, we were intimidated to begin taking lessons from him. True, he has high, though not unreasonable, expectations (and his students perform accordingly), but he is kind and even funny! A year ago, my daughter was performing and her judge saw Mr. Lee's name and told her how fortunate she was to be taking from "the best". We've taken lessons for about a year and a half now, and we credit Mr. Lee with her more confident and full sound, her faster tonguing, improved embouchure, and her more mature sound (he's pushed her up two reed sizes). Wish we'd started with him earlier...you should hear his advanced students! GOOGLE REVIEW AB: My son has been taking lessons with Mr. Lee for almost 3 years and I only wish we had started sooner. Mr. Lee has made an immense difference in my son’s dedication to the clarinet. He has taught my son technique, impressed upon him the importance of practice, and taught him how to practice. He has challenged my son and therefore made him more confident and poised in his performance. (This confidence and ability to work hard at an instrument spilled over into his study habits!) Mr. Lee has wonderful lesson hours, including unusual weekend hours for his students who are so overbooked during the week. Mr. Lee has high expectations and really knows how to reach kids to help them understand the dynamics of the music and the repertoire he teaches. He is an excellent teacher, and we have enjoyed the recitals and performance opportunities. You know a teacher is wonderful when you can hear the beautiful repertoire through practice at home and you can see improvements in chair placement for All-District and All-Virginia audition results each year. |
Kenneth Lee has been a popular teacher for many years, and his often-imitated teaching approach, now available in his book, Clarinet Express (reviews below), has attracted many clarinet students to his active, supportive, and exciting independent clarinet studio in the Northern Virginia area.
Each year as many as 40 aspiring young clarinetists join his studio in order to improve and enjoy their clarinet experiences. From the introduction of a short, daily practice routine to help develop clarinet fundamentals to an express path to fluency and understanding of music through private lessons, small group prep classes, recitals and non-competitive and competitive events, all of his students benefit from a peer group of energetic young clarinet students. All who would like to become better clarinet players and experience the pride and enjoyment of developing their musical abilities are welcome. Most do not aspire to professional music careers, but pursue their studies for the fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment that results from focused, purposeful study of a musical instrument through the pre-college years. Those who do have successfully attained professional positions in orchestras, military bands, universities and conservatories. A majority of my students are referred by the public school Band Directors in and around Fairfax County who recommend them to me for highly-qualified instruction. Most of my students are among the top clarinetists in their elementary, middle and high school bands. Though I am especially proud of the accomplishments of the dozens who now have established their own careers in performing and teaching positions across the country, the real satisfaction I find is in helping each student develop the confidence that comes with knowing what they can and have accomplished. Almost all of my alumni play the clarinet through their college years, whether or not they major in music. And it pleases me that, for most, music will play an important and on-going role in their adult lives. On our website, please check out our alumni and current students' pages and thank for visiting!! I hope we have a chance to meet!
