Wonkak Kim
Won Kak Kim was awarded a large scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he double-majored in mathematics and music. He received his Doctorate from Florida State University where he studied with Frank Kowalsky. Won has been a featured soloist with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic, performing the Nielson Clarinet Concerto (from memory). He is Associate Professor of Clarinet at the University of Oregon
Glenn Dickson
Glenn Dickson-Another member of our first graduating class, Glenn attended New England Conservatory where he obtained Bachelor and Master Degrees in Clarinet Performance. Glenn has produced and performed on 7 CDs with his klezmer group Shirim; his children’s album produced with Maurice Sendak received an award of “Best Children’s Album”.

Garrick Zoeter
Garrick Zoeter, the studio’s first MTNA National Winner, got his Bachelor’s degree from The Juilliard School where he studied with Charles Neidick and his Masters Degree from Yale where he studied with David Schiffrin. Garrick’s quartet Antares won the Young Concert Artist auditions. Garrick has performed as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra as the winner of the NSO Young Soloist Competition, and is the Anna Lee Van Buren Chair in Clarinet; Coordinator of Winds and Percussion; Associate Professor, Clarinet at Shenandoah University and Conservatory.

Jayden Liu, a graduate of Oakton High School, was principal clarinet of the Capital Symphonic Youth Orchestra for three years and a member of Virginia All-State Band for three years. He was First Place Winner of NVMTA Woodwind Competitions, Virginia State winner of the MTNA National Woodwind Competition in 2021. He enjoys tennis, learning about history, drawing, movies, and writing/designing narratives. Jayden was a nine year member of our studio. He is currently attending Washington University in St. Louis

Senior at UNC Chapel Hill where he is a Keenan Music Scholar on a full scholarship.

Jon Noble
Eric Jacobs
Eric Jacobs graduated with highest honors in the music department of VCU as a clarinet performance major under Charles West, and received his Master’s Degree at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University under Michael Webster and his Doctorate from the University of Southern California under Yehuda Galad. He is a clarinetist in the Seattle Symphony.

Elliot Lee is a recent graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and is currently attending Princeton University. He was a first clarinet in the TJ Wind Symphony and co-principle clarinet of The Capitol Symphonic Youth Orchestra. His Art Supplement submitted to Princeton included Spohr Concerto no. 1 First Movement and Second Movement of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto.

Christopher Grant
Clarinetist Staff Sergeant Christopher Grant joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in July 2006. Staff Sgt. Grant began his musical training on the clarinet at age 9. After graduating in 2002 from James Madison High School in Vienna, Va., he earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Michigan (U-M) in Ann Arbor in 2006. His instructors included Kenneth Lee of Vienna, and Fred Ormand and Deborah Chodacki of U-M. Grant teaches clarinet at the Landon School.
In 2012, Staff Sgt. Grant performed Vincenzo Bellini’s Gran Duetto Concertato La Sonnambula for E-flat and B-flat clarinets with Gunnery Sgt. Michelle Urzynicok at the International ClarinetFest in Lincoln, Neb. |
Juliana Evans Arnold
Senior Master Sgt. Julianna Evans Arnold is a clarinetist with the Concert Band, The United States Air Force Band, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C. A native of Vienna, Virginia, she joined the Air Force in January 2000. She teaches privately at Bishop Ireton High School.
A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, Arnold received a Bachelor of Music degree, magna cum laude in 1997. During her undergraduate studies, she was the winner of the Virginia Commonwealth University Concerto Competition. She earned a Master of Music degree in 1999 from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Before joining the Air Force, Arnold participated in the Cincinnati Chamber Arts Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. Additionally, she was a semi-finalist in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Her former teachers include Kenneth Lee, Dr. Charles West, Ted Oien, Dan Silver and Ronald deKant. |
Cynthia Douglas
One of our studio’s first alums, Cynthia was First-Chair Virginia All State, left to major in clarinet at Oberlin where she studied with Larry McDonald until an accident threatened her eyesight if she continued to play clarinet. She now performs as a Celtic Harpist and has recorded five CDs.
Michael Banks
Michael Banks was the studio’s first MTNA National Finalist, studied physics on the Full-Trustee Scholarship at University of Southern California. Dr. Banks is a physicist living in Great Falls, Virginia.
Cameron Dahl
Cameron Dahl, a graduate of William and Mary, is a Minister of Music.
Marietta Squire
Marietta Squire attended West Point Military Academy, and was the starting goalie for the women’s soccer team. She survived several tours in Iraq, and now is studying medicine.

Christopher You attended the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Frank Cohen, principal clarinet of the Cleveland Orchestra.
Kathleen Budney
Kathleen Budney is a graduate of UNC, Chapel Hill, where she studied with Donald Oehler, and is Personnel Manager of the Brooklyn Philharmonic

Megan Kim is attending the Peabody Conservatory of Music where she studied with Steve Barta, principal clarinet Baltimore Symphony.

Joseph Cackler, a recent graduate of Stanford University, was an MTNA national finalist.
Philip Kowalczyk
Philip Kowalczyk, an MTNA National Finalist, was accepted at Princeton after a personal phone call from the Princeton University Orchestra director, congratulating him on his “arts supplement” CD including the Debussy Premiere Rhapsody.
Emily Avesian
Emily Avesian- Bachelor of Music, VCU and Master of Music Arizona State. Studies with Charles West and Robert Spring. Emily is the Personnel Manager of the Richmond Symphony.
